Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed Sadio Mane as a modern-day icon and added that the Senegalese is one of the greatest players of the Premier League club.

Mane joined Bayern Munich on a three-year contract after six seasons with Liverpool, the Bundesliga champions confirmed the much-anticipated signing on Wednesday (June 22).

Reflecting on Mane’s impact at Anfield, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s a big moment. There is no point in anyone trying to pretend otherwise. One of Liverpool’s greatest ever players is leaving and we must acknowledge how significant this is.

“He leaves with our gratitude and our love. He leaves with his status among the greats guaranteed. And, yes, he leaves in a moment where he is one of the best players in world football. But we must not dwell on what we now lose, instead celebrate what we were privileged to have. The goals he scored, the trophies he won; a legend, for sure, but also a modern-day Liverpool icon.

Klopp added: “I respect completely his decision and I’m sure our supporters do also. If you love LFC, you have to love Sadio non-negotiable. It is possible to do this while accepting our loss is Bayern’s gain. We wish him nothing but success in every match he plays in, unless, of course, it’s against us. His star will continue to rise, I have no doubts.”

Mane left Liverpool after helping the side to reach Champions League glory in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020. He won the Club World Cup (2019), FA Cup (2022) and Carabao Cup (2022) with Liverpool. He scored 120 goals in 269 games in all competitions during his time at Anfield.

Liverpool have signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica for a fee worth upto 100 million euros. The 22-year-old Uruguayan Nunez will replace Mane at Anfield. Mohamed Salah will remain with Liverpool for at least one more season. The club has also signed Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay
