Four Police officers, including former Kegalle Senior Superintendent of Police KB Keerthiratne, have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department last night in relation to the shooting in Rambukkana that resulted in the death of a protester.
The arrest was made on an order issued by the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court.
Former Kegalle SSP KB Keerthiratne, who was the Chief Commanding Officer during the shooting, was arrested in Colombo.
The CID also arrested three Police Constables in connection to the incident in Kundasale, Kandy yesterday.
Police informed that further action will be taken in accordance with the Court directive.
The Police Headquarters yesterday received the order issued by the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court to arrest all Policemen involved in the shooting on the 19th of April.
Accordingly, the Inspector General of Police issued directives to the DIG in Charge of the CID to make the arrests.
Kegalle Magistrate Wasana Nawarathna on Wednesday informed Court that according to the report submitted by the Judicial Medical Officer, the individual died of gunshot injuries.
A tense situation was reported in Rambukkana on the 19th of April with area residents engaging in protests from morning demanding a steady supply of fuel and against the recent fuel price revision.
Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters and opened fire when they failed to disperse the crowds.
One individual died in the Police gunfire, while several others also sustained injuries.
