Nearly two months after it invaded Ukraine, Russia test-launched the Sarmat missile, a new nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic weapon, on Wednesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the weapon would “provide food for thought” for those who try to threaten his country while the defence ministry claimed it was the “world’s most powerful” missile.

Here’s all you need to know about the Sarmat missile.

  • The Sarmat missile is a new nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile.
  • It was test-launched for the first time from Plesetsk in northwest Russia and hit targets in the Kamchatka peninsula, nearly 6,000 km (3,700 miles) away.
  • The missile weighs more than 200 tonnes and can transport more than ten warheads, it is believed.
  • As per Russian media, Sarmat is a three-stage, liquid-fueled missile with a range of 18,000 km. The missile is 35.3 meters long and 3 meters in diameter.
  • It has been designed to elude anti-missile defence systems with a short initial boost phase, giving enemy surveillance systems a tiny window to track.
  • The long-range missile has been in the works since the 2000s.
  • Russia’s nuclear forces will start taking delivery of the new missile “in the autumn of this year” once testing is complete, Tass news agency reported.
  • Sarmat has been dubbed Satan 2 by Western analysts. It is among Russia’s next-generation missiles that Putin has called “invincible,” and which also include the Kinzhal and Avangard hypersonic missiles.
  • It has the “highest tactical and technical characteristics and is capable of overcoming all modern means of anti-missile defence” according to Russian President Putin. He added that the missile can hit any target on Earth.
  • “Sarmat is the most powerful missile with the longest range of destruction of targets in the world, which will significantly increase the combat power of our country’s strategic nuclear forces,” the Russian defence ministry said in a statement.
